The 10-minute check-in that keeps you close

A sunset picnic for two

Most couples only really talk when something's wrong. A daily check-in flips that. It's ten minutes where you catch up as people, not as co-managers of a household.

Why it works

Relationship researchers keep coming back to the same idea: closeness is built in small, regular moments, not big gestures. The Gottman Institute recommends a daily "stress-reducing conversation", where partners talk about what's going on outside the relationship and simply listen and support each other. Ten minutes a day adds up to more than an hour of real connection a week.

How to do it

  1. Pick a fixed moment. After the kids are in bed, with the first coffee, or in the car. Same time each day makes it a habit.
  2. Phones away. Face down, in another room, or on silent. This is the whole point.
  3. Take turns. About five minutes each. One talks, the other listens.
  4. Listen to understand, not to fix. Unless they ask for advice, just be on their side. "That sounds frustrating" goes a long way.

Four questions to use

  • What was the best part of your day?
  • What's taking up most of your headspace right now?
  • Is there anything I can take off your plate this week?
  • What's something you're looking forward to?

Once a week: go a bit deeper

On the weekend, add one bigger question:

  • When did you feel closest to me this week?
  • Is there anything you've wanted to say but haven't?
  • What's one thing we could do for fun this month?
  • How are we doing, honestly?

What to avoid

  • Turning it into a planning meeting. Keep logistics for another time.
  • Bringing up old fights. If something big comes up, agree to talk about it properly later.
  • Skipping it when you're busy. Busy weeks are when you need it most.

Make it a little ritual

Some couples pour a glass of wine, some make tea, some light a candle. A small cue tells your brain "this is our time". After a couple of weeks you'll miss it when you skip it, and that's how you know it's working.
